Attention: Niagara’s Most Wanted “Jailbirds”!
Do you have a coworker who is always running late, never refills the coffee pot, hums a little too loudly or always leaves dirty dishes in the kitchen sink?
Well now’s your chance to even the score and make them a jailbird! On Friday, October 16th, jailbirds will be arrested by the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) and Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Catharines-Thorold and District (BBBS) on joke charges and taken to our makeshift jail in the BBBS parking lot. Jailbirds must use their connections to raise bail for their release. The total bail is set at $15,000 and all monies raised will help free up our kids who are currently on the wait list, anxiously waiting for a caring mentor through our In-School Mentoring (ISM) program.
We need YOU to throw the book at your worst-offending colleague, friend or family member and nominate them to be a jailbird!
Why This Event Is Important
Money raised at Jail & Bail helps Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Catharines-Thorold and District’s In-School Mentoring (ISM) Program:
- Our goal: Our goal is to match 25 children on our waitlist with a caring ISM mentor. To reach this goal, we need to raise $15,000. Last year, Jail & Bail raised $14,000, helping us match 23 children on the waitlist and this year we want to do even better!
- Where the money goes: It costs $600 to match a child in the ISM program in our service area. You can make a difference by providing the funding needed for our professional, trained staff to carefully screen volunteer and match them in long-term, safe mentoring relationships, while providing necessary ongoing support for the volunteers, children and families.
- The benefits of mentorship: Our mentoring programs provide solutions to help kids stay in school, avoid risky behavior such as bullying and grow up to be more civic-minded adults. A recent national survey reveals that 76% of children in our school-based mentoring programs showed improved school grades; 80% have a better school attendance; and 90% get along better with their peers.
